Derivation of the angle at which shear stress is maximum:

Shear stress is maximum at 45 degree from the principal plane. Below is the derivation of the angle at which shear stress is maximum. 

Principal plane:

At principal plane direct or normal stress is maximum and there is no shear stress on principal plane.
