Surface tension
Surface tension is defined as
The process due to which a tight thin sheet is formed on the surface of fluid due to unbalanced molecular attration is known as Surface tension.
For example
- Collapse of bubbles.
- Mosquito floating on the surface of water .
Units of Absolute viscosity
The SI units of absolute viscosity is Nsec/(m)2.
Poise is also the unit of absolute viscosity and
! N*sec/(m)2=10 Poise.
Kinematic viscosity
It is the ratio between absolute viscosity of the fluid to the density of the fluid.
Kinematic viscosity mostly have certain different values from the absolute viscosity due to the influence of the density.
Units
Units of kinematic viscosity are (m)2/sec.
Stoke is also the unit of kinematic viscosity which is equal to (cm)2/sec.
1(m)2/sec=(10)4 stoke.
Viscometer
The instrument which is used to measure viscosity is known as viscometer.
There are three main types of viscometer.
- Tube type viscometer.
- Rotational viscometer.
- Falling sphere viscometer.
Capillarity action
The process of rise or fall of liquid in a very small diameter tube is known as capillarity action.
Note
- (m)2 means meter square.
- (10)4 mean 10 Raise to the power 4 i.e 10000.
- (cm)2 means centimeter square.
