Transpiration : Transpiration is the process by which water leaves the body of a living plant and reaches the atmosphere as water vapour.
Factors affecting transpiration :
For a given plant, factors which affect transpiration are the same as that of evaporation.
The important factors affecting transpiration are
- atmospheric vapour pressure
- temperature of air
- wind intensity
- light intensity
- Characteristic of plant
Major Difference Between Transpiration & Evaporation :
Transpiration is essentially confined to day light hours and the rate of transpiration depends upon the growth of plant.
Evaporation, on the other hand, continues the whole day and night although the rates are different.
Importance in Engineering Hydrology :
In Engineering hydrology, runoff is the main subject of study and evaporation and transpiration are treated as losses.
